  1. Chor Leoni goes Pop

If all the Lions in Chor Leoni didn’t have perma grins on their faces after their warm-hearted Pop Capella concert, they should have had. Artistic Director and Conductor Erick Lichte led the men in an evening of pops favourites. From Sting’s “Fields of Gold” to Billy Joel’s “Lullabye (Goodbye My Angel)” and a rousing Quebec folk song, there certainly were songs everyone knew and perhaps even hummed along to on Friday evening. Joining Chor Leoni were Jodi Proznick and her band: Jodi on bass, David Sikula on guitar, Meredith Bates, violin and Robin Layne, percussion. Their presence was such a wonderfully natural addition to the choir it makes you wonder why it hadn’t been done before. Also remarkable in the evening’s program was the Canadian content. Sixteen of the 19 songs presented were either arranged by Canadians or were Canadian songs. Lichte now presents more choir members as soloists — often performing with instruments like guitar or percussion. Yet the most remarkable aspect of the evening was how much fun the men were having. The graphics for the program, and on the publicity material in the last few months, have shown men leaping into the air with joy. While they didn’t add such energetic choreography to the show, their obvious delight in their performance simply washed over the audience. The evening officially ended with Tom Kelly’s “True Colors” and Peter Gabriel’s “In Your Eyes” featuring Keith Sinclair as soloist. But in true Chor Leoni fashion, it all ended with a true crowd pleaser, and this reviewer’s favourite Beatle’s hit: “Hey Jude.” Here was an evening when everyone walked out of the theatre with a big smile on their face, and probably a comment that said, “Hey, that was a great evening.” Well done, gentlemen! Well done! Three more performances: March 2 at 4:00 p.m. and 8:00 p.m. and March 3 at 8:00 p.m. at the Vancouver Playhouse. GO! You will love it.

  2. Loved the wonderful power of the male voices singing songs from the 60s.70s,80s which my group really enjoys hearing.

  5. The show was excellent! We really enjoyed the variety of songs. Jodi Proznick’s band was fabulous, combined with the sweet sounds of the choir. The encore, Hey Jude, was the perfect ending to a great show, almost two hours of superb music, with no intermission. I also really like the trademark Chor Leoni habit of coming out into the audience at the end, and being present in the lobby after the show to say goodnight to guests. Nice touch.

  12. Last night I attended Chor Leoni’s first “Pop Cappella” event, and for me
two emotions were in play as the evening unfolded – extreme pride and also
temporary regret, the latter because I had been forced to step back from this
event for health reasons, and pride because once again the Lions had offered
its audience members an evening of wonderful entertainment in their
    typically classy manner.

Instead of being on stage, I happily helped out with “front-of-house” duties.
This gave me the opportunity to slip into the house and enjoy the performance
for myself, and this I can do two more times this weekend!

Kudos to my CL brothers! It was a joy to just sit back and enjoy the music,
a rare experience when one is usually occupying a spot on the risers.
I shall be back in the den next Wednesday, eager and prepared to be
involved in the remaining events of the current season. It will be
    wonderful to be back!

    Sincerely,
    Jim Knight.

  16. I enjoyed some of the show. Together with my husband, I wondered if some of the song choices were the best fit to show off the strengths of the choir. We imagined some Mommas and Poppas would have been a great fit. Just a thought. Loved the intimacy of the Playhouse venue. Would love to encourage concert-goers to refrain from using scented products.

  17. We loved it. Erick did a great job of programming the material. I thought it was brilliant to put Down in the Valley in the middle of the show. It was a wonderful contrast to what had gone before and added a whole new dimension to the experience. I also love to hear Chor Leoni sing in unison every now and again, the quality of their sound is so exquisitely beautiful.

  21. Yet again, you offered a wonderful program! We like that you mix things up quite a bit so that no two concerts are very similar, yet all enjoyable. At first, I was a bit worried that the musicians would occupy too much air space, but my mind was set to rest as the concert unfolded. They are very talented and blended in very well with your program. Hopefully you can persuade them to do another concert with you next Season!

  25. As always, Chor Leoni’s performance on Sunday evening was outstanding. We actually had not attended a CL concert outside of the many Christmas ones so it was great to hear them singing other genres of music. I think that the members have become more audience-oriented over the years – we very much enjoy the solos and the small groups. There is more audience connection. Thank you!

  36. Singing was top notch as always – however the overall performance seemed a bit lacklustre compared with so many of the Chor Leoni performances that we’ve been to. Not the usual energy, diversity of performance modes and audience connection. I always enjoy the solo parts and there were relatively few at this performance. Also, one of the program songs (which was the one I most was anticipating (Lullaby) was skipped with no mention as to why.

I have a young granddaughter whom I have taken to two manely shows. I miss not having that to take her to. And, in case I don’t get a chance to tell you on the next page, far and away my favourite song was Hey Jude and you don’t give me that choice!

  54. Though a skillfully-deployed stuffed parrot can be festive and decidedly compelling in the right hands, I enjoyed sacrificing the visual elements of the Bard shows for more focus on the music. There was a very satisfying movement between upbeat and mellow numbers and a minimum of unison singing (I’m a sucker for harmony—it’s what choral music is all about for me). Various and sundry observations include the fact that Jodi Proznick is a stud on the upright bass; Nicholas Kelley’s arrangement of Stevie Wonder’s Overjoyed found the Lerner and Loewe in his music that I never knew was there; and lastly, Erick is so utterly wrong when he contends that not all of David Bowie’s catalogue could be arranged for a TTBB choir. Just saying.

  100. A new direction for sure. I have a hard time balancing the amplified music with the sound of the choir. Sometimes the music overpowers everything. But, Popcapella adds a new dimension to the Chor Leoni’s presentation. On a side note, those of us in row five had the light from your music stand shining right into ours. Maybe shade it a bit more?

  101. I thoroughly enjoyed it, however a few reactions are: – start the show with the music before the curtains open – have the men in the back row move with appropriate music – turning to one side or the other – I thought there were some odd harmonies in the band in the first piece – the piece later in the program with the guitar intro was not smooth – Jordan’s final piece wound up the program beautifully – the singing was excellent my reactions were to a stilted feeling of the stage presence.

  107. Good..but I liked the Bard venue better and preferred it when you put on a ´fun’ show to just standing there with 19 songs and no intermission. Time too late in aft. And location very difficult. Downtown driving is not fun.

  149. Your show was very enjoyable,as always. The music choices were wonderful. Only thing we would have loved to have seen is one or two “theatrical” numbers like you did at the Bard. And how about a “Queen” song or Michael Buble one of these times? It was hard to pick one favourite song on the survey so the other two were “Fields of Gold” and “Hey Jude”.

  166. Various and sundry observations include the fact that Jodi Proznick is a stud on the upright base; Nicholas Kelley’s arrangement of Stevie Wonder’s Overjoyed found the Lerner and Loewe in his music that I never knew was there; and lastly, Erick is so utterly wrong when he contends that not all of David Bowie’s catalogue could be arranged for a TTBB choir. Just saying.

  209. Sorry, but I was disappointed with the Pops Concert. I thought that you would take the best of the popular music, and stamp it with the Chor Leoni style. Instead, you adopted the incessant (and loud) drum/cymbal beat which turns potentially lovely songs into the brain drilling kind I switch off radio or TV.
Perhaps this stage was too small to allow the kind of choreography (and costumes) some of the group did so well at Bard on the Beach. If so, then the “dancing” of those two fellows should have been axed. It was not up to your past standards, and I felt embarrassed for them, and for the guest I brought. She, like me, expected much better of your group.
Well, okay, we did enjoy Bridge Over Troubled Water.
